SALT LAKE CITY — Utah Senator Orrin Hatch and an anti-pornography group want to pressure the Obama administration into prosecuting pornographers.

Hatch and the group Morality in Media contend the U.S. Department of Justice is prosecuting old cases but hasn’t launched any new investigations and hasn’t indicted anyone for obscenity arising from adult-content pornography since President Obama took office.

The Deseret News reports Morality in Media is calling on people to phone U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder to voice their concerns. It set up a phone number — 877-639-1977 — that will reach the Justice Department’s switchboard.

Last month Hatch circulated a letter to Holder signed by 42 U.S. senators that calls for the prosecution of “major commercial distributors of hardcore adult pornography.”

Pamela Atkinson, chair of the Utah Coalition Against Pornography, says some people feel pornography is harmless. She believes that perception would change with more enforcement.

She told the Deseret News, “If the U.S. Attorney General’s office started to come down on these pornographic industries, it would send a clear message to people that, no, it is not harmless.”
