In the Winter 2011 edition of EMMA (Germany’s leading feminist magazine in Germany, and the only political magazine in Europe entirely run by women) a large part of the magazine was dedicated to pornography. We’ve translated them into English. Below is the first of three parts we will be publishing of The dream of being a porn star, a detailed account from a survivor of the pornography industry.

Kim is sitting opposite Alice Schwarzer (Germany’s most prominent feminist and publisher of EMMA) and Chantal Louis (Editor of EMMA) and talks. She talks and talks, for one hour; two. And what she said even dumbfounded Alice Schwarzer and Chantal Louis who did not have any illusions about what working in the pornography industry is like. On the 20th of September 2010 Kim (an alias) wrote to Alice Schwarzer. “It is not easy for me to find the right words” she said and what followed made one thing clear: she knows the truth about the porn industry. Kim worked as a “performer” in pornography for three years – from 2005 to 2008. She did it to earn money for herself and her young daughter to pay off the tax debt of her ex-husband, whose business in Germany was registered under her name. The man who she, aged 19, assumed to be her protector soon turned out to be her psychological tormentor. “It was a dog and master marriage” she reflects now. Kim narrowly survived her marriage and it will probably take a life time for her to deal with what happened to her in the porn industry.

“I tried getting a job – anything. Work in the hospitality sector or a job as a cleaner. But because I am a single parent every single employer asked: how do manage that with your daughter? I told them that I have day care for my daughter. I was told: No, children can get ill and a single mum would not be flexible. And all the time the IRS was getting at me.
